What a Wuss!

When you think of a labrador dog, don’t you think of a tough, protector type dog? I guess I do. Our last lab, Sadie, was a big, black, broad chested dog who we always felt would protect us if she ever needed to. Although she was a gentle giant, she also had a mean growl and would not let a cat within a foot of our house.

Not so with our 3-year old yellow lab, Sophie. What a wuss! Doug and I have commented before that we’ve never heard her growl in her 3 years. Oh sure, sometimes when she sits on the edge of the bed looking out the bedroom window, she rumbles  a little when she sees a squirrel  wander by the window, but I’ve never heard a deep ferocious growl, or bark come out of her. I guess this is good, but sometimes, like at three in the morning yesterday, a little growling might have been called for.

Every once in awhile, Sophie wakes up in the night and knocks on the back door, needing to go outside, as she did yesterday morning. I stumbled out of bed, let her out, went to the bathroom myself and then went back to let her in. Normally, we both take the same amount of time to do our business. This morning though, when I opened the garage door, no Sophie. I yelled for her. No Sophie. Finally, I turned the garage light on and yelled. She ran in the garage through her doggie door, but suddenly stopped as she reached the step.

The hair on the back of her neck stood up as she turned around and began barking at “something”  in her kennel. Oh crap! All I could think was that another opossum had decided to spend the night in the garage. I grabbed a bucket for protection (first thing I saw) and slowly looked into the kennel. A furry yellow cat laid there on Sophie’s pillow, all curled up. But it wasn’t peacefully sleeping, it was mad and hissing at both of us! Our neighbor Zelda had told us about this wild, hissing cat.

I thought that Sophie would get the cat out of her kennel, but she was too scared! What dog is afraid of a cat? I think she was way more scared of the cat than the cat was of her, as the cat would not budge from her warm bed. I took the bucket and poked it inside the kennel, and finally the cat ran under the bench and outside.

By this time, with all the barking and yelling, Doug too was up and had come outside asking what the heck was going on. After I had shooed the cat outside, Sophie became a little braver and chased after it. Of course she was now safe, as the cat escaped through the chain link fence and freedom.

I hope that we never have to depend on Sophie to protect us from a burglar in the middle of the night! If she’s afraid of a little kitty, I think we’re in big trouble!!
